postcards and photos from the early-mid 1900s

125 Munchen. Maximulianeum

Dear Aunt Jean, I think this is a palace but I haven’t seen it yet. Munich is a beautiful city and has very wide and clean streets. The place we are staying in is a girl student’s hostel and is in a quiet part of the town. We pay 1-/6 for bed and breakfast and have the sweetest little rooms you ever saw.

M 226. Munchen, Maximilianeum bei Nacht

We went a walk around this way the other night but it wasn’t floodlit. It is beside the river and Dorothy and Abby are duly impressed by the speed of the [???] of the Isar. We haven’t been in any museums yet but will probably go to this palace and some of the galleries near it on Sunday unless we can get an excursion somewhere. There aren’t any weekend excursions now, just one a week on Wednesday. Much Love from Helen.

Munchen, Isar mit Lukaskirche

Dear Auntie, it’s just above this weir that we saw [???] and you can see the boiling effect in the water on the other side of this bridge. Aren’t the postcards all lovely? I meant to get some at the [???] on Tuesday but forgot, so I’ll need to get them the next time we go. I’ve been reading that the lake is 13 miles long and 3 miles across at it’s widest parts so you can see it’s a fair size building at the back. This view is a church and that’s an island in the river on the left side. Our German is getting on not so badly, we can understand infinitely better than we can speak it and I seem to be speaking more French than anything else. With Best Love from Helen.

Munchen, Idyll im Hofbrauhaushof

Dear Father, thank-you for the Herald which arrived this am. Uncle Jack is fairly excelling himself in his occasional appearances - Three wickets in one over was pretty hot! The whole of the Loius Shandling [???] is on in one of the biggest picture houses but it costs 1.10 for the cheapest seat there. This is the garden part of the famous Hofbrauhaushof and in Dorothy’s p/c you see the entrance hall arches on the right and there is a beer cellar and then two floors of beer halls with the room in each case taking up the whole length and breadth of the building. They have bands too, and you sit and drink beer and eat sausages etc. and listen to the music. They don’t serve either coffee or lemonade so you just have to go without any drinks if you don’t beer or wine. Much love Helen.

Munchen, Hofbrauhaus

Dear Dorothy, thankyou very much for your letter. Do you mean to say you haven’t returned my library after all the times I reminded you still, I haven’t to pay the 1-/4 so it’s not so bad. Congrats on your golf, did you see Helen or Auntie B playing at all? Did you see the Charlie Chaplin picture? I think I told you we saw a comedy one night with Annie [???] in it and we’ve been told that some of the picture houses in Munich have cushioned seats, I can hardly believe it though. We may go to see Ruffles of Red Soap some week night. Much Love Helen.
